David was recently reading a book called "Taking Back Childhood" (which you may like, if you're into non-fiction type books) that has really gotten us thinking about toys and how kids should be playing, rather than just being entertained. Along those lines, I love your idea to give "experience" rather than stuff (junk mostly, in my opinion). I just wish my kids' birthdays were sooner....
Oh, and how do the toys multiply so quickly? It seems like no sooner do I clean out some unused toys so their room feels less cluttered, and then the next time I turn around it's overrun with toys again. Maybe when we eventually move into our own home we can "accidentally" leave some toys to permanently live at Grandma and Grandpa's house....Mariehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03825936195960264460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-131769745342602720.post-73880665147613531742011-04-19T17:14:25.611-05:002011-04-19T17:14:25.611-05:00It's funny, because over the past couple of we...It's funny, because over the past couple of weeks I have been thinking over the whole gift giving thing as well; let's face it though, it is probably because I am terrible at giving gifts. Mainly for lack of really knowing what a person would want, and because it does seem a bit trite at times. As I thought over it, though, an idea came to mind: why not, instead of receiving gifts, you give them instead? It's an idea in progress, but it seems that helping someone focus on others instead of themselves is a good way to instill that selfless desire. Of course, it is still an idea in progress, but hey, as you pointed out in not so many words, we as parents have to do what we feel in the best for our children.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-131769745342602720.post-23469697032611303112011-04-19T13:45:34.998-05:002011-04-19T13:45:34.998-05:00Seriously love this idea! I think that he would value and have more memories by this birthday "experience".
Sorry but I am stealing..;)Emilyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07558745290893058935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-131769745342602720.post-80759678638970676092011-04-19T13:37:54.386-05:002011-04-19T13:37:54.386-05:00That's an awesome idea! With his upcoming birthday I hadn't been able to decide what to give him because he certainly doesn't need any more toys. I love the idea of giving experience.Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11041659624414691141noreply@blogger.com
